The citadel was built by the Moors and remained a Moor stronghold for around 200 years. Afterwards it was restored and used as a royal residence.
Completed in 1309, King James II converted the palace to Gothic style but some of the Moorish influences remained. By the time it was completed, 4 large battlement towers, a large dome and a portico had been added.
Today the Almudaina Palace houses the offices of the Capitan General (the harbour master for the Balearic Islands) as well as countless works of art and prized tapestries. In 1960 the gardens were extended and now contain various sculptures including the famous “Egg” by Joan Miró.
