Alpine Huts & Campsites

This collection features essential stopovers along Iceland's premier hiking routes, including the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails. These locations provide basic shelter and camping facilities in remote terrains like the rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar and the volcanic valleys of Þórsmörk. Several sites offer geothermal pools and cooking facilities, serving as vital logistics hubs for navigating the Highlands' volatile weather and rugged landscapes.

Landmannalaugar

Geothermal area in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, serving as the northern trailhead for the Laugavegur trail. Features a large mountain hut and natural hot springs for bathing.

Skogafoss

Spectacular waterfall approximately 60 meters high and 25 meters wide, featuring powerful cascades that often produce rainbows and panoramic views from the top.

Bruarfoss Waterfall

Waterfall in a spring-fed river surrounded by dense birch shrubbery, notable for its striking blue waters.

Þakgil

Canyon campsite sheltered by steep palagonite walls. Features a natural dining cave with a fireplace and hiking trails leading toward the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

Emstrur

A stop on the Laugavegur trail consisting of three huts. Located near the Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon, it provides bunk beds and a communal kitchen for hikers.

Alftavatn Hut

Lakeside mountain huts on the Laugavegur trail. The site includes a restaurant, bar, and camping area located between the Hrafntinnusker and Emstrur stages.

Fimmvörðuskáli

Mountain hut situated on the Fimmvörðuháls pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Provides basic accommodation for those crossing the high-altitude volcanic terrain.

Kerlingarfjöll

Highland base in a geothermal mountain range. Offers a mix of cabins and camping facilities near steaming vents and orange rhyolite peaks.

Camping Skógafoss

Campsite located at the base of the Skógafoss waterfall. Provides basic amenities including toilets and showers for visitors starting the Fimmvörðuháls hike.

Skjól

Campsite and hostel located between the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall. Features an on-site restaurant and bar.

Hvanngil

Mountain hut on the Laugavegur trail, historically used as a sheep shelter. Offers sleeping bag accommodation and a stable for horses.

Skælingar

Remote hut located in a lava field near the Eldgjá volcanic fissure. Features unique lava formations and basic shelter for hikers in the eastern Highlands.

Strútur á Mælifellssandi

Mountain hut located north of Mýrdalsjökull. Serves as a base for exploring the Mælifellssandur black sand desert and the Strútslaug natural hot spring.

Hvítárnes

The oldest mountain hut in the Icelandic Highlands, built in 1930. Located near Hvítárvatn lake and the Langjökull glacier.

Árnes Hostel

Hostel and campsite in South Iceland. Features a shared kitchen and communal lounge with proximity to the Þjórsárdalur valley.
