Natural Landscapes of Tonga

Tonga’s archipelago features a dramatic array of volcanic and limestone formations. This collection highlights the country's diverse topography, including the stratovolcano Kao, Tonga’s highest peak, and the caldera lakes of Niuafo'ou like Vai Lahi. It covers the active volcanic activity of Tofua’s Lofi'a crater and the remnants of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption. On 'Eua, the Fangatave Cliffs showcase ancient uplifted limestone, while the remote islands of Late and Tafahi preserve undisturbed ecosystems and volcanic summits.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai

Submarine volcano known for its massive 2022 eruption, which significantly reshaped the island and created a record-breaking atmospheric plume.

Kao

Symmetrical stratovolcano that marks the highest point in Tonga, rising 1,030 meters above sea level in the Ha'apai group.

Vai Lahi

Large crater lake located within the Niuafo'ou caldera. It reaches depths of over 80 meters and contains several smaller islands.

Lofi'a

Active volcanic crater on Tofua Island, characterized by persistent fumarolic activity within a five-kilometer-wide caldera.

Late

Uninhabited volcanic island in the Vava'u group, featuring a central crater and serving as a sanctuary for the rare Tongan megapode bird.

Fangatave Cliffs

Dramatic limestone cliffs on the eastern coast of 'Eua Island, featuring hidden sea caves and rugged hiking trails.

Piu 'o Tafahi

Volcanic peak on Tafahi island, rising 560 meters. The mountain is covered in lush forest and was historically used for navigation.

High point on the rim of the Niuafo'ou caldera, offering views over the Vai Lahi crater lake and the surrounding volcanic terrain.

Ano

Landlocked freshwater lake located on the main island of Vava'u, situated near the village of Tu'anuku.
