Castles and Fortifications

Umbria’s strategic landscape is defined by medieval fortresses, ancient defensive walls, and watchtowers. This collection spans centuries of military architecture, from the 3rd-century BC Etruscan Arch in Perugia to the 14th-century Rocca Albornoziana in Spoleto. These sites showcase diverse engineering, including the Renaissance-era underground passages of Rocca Paolina and the high-altitude watchtowers like Torre dell’Olio, which were essential for defending the region's hilltop citadels and vital trade routes.

Rocca Albornoziana

A 14th-century fortress commissioned by Cardinal Albornoz. It features six square towers and two internal courtyards, serving as a strategic seat for Papal governors and later as a prison until 1982.

Torre dell’Olio

A 13th-century medieval watchtower integrated into the Renaissance Palazzo Vigili. Standing 45 meters tall, it is the highest tower in Spoleto and is historically associated with defensive maneuvers against invading forces.

Rocca Paolina

The Rocca Paolina was a Renaissance fortress in Perugia, built in 1540-1543 for Pope Paul III to designs by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.

Etruscan Arch

The Etruscan Arch or Arch of Augustus or Augustus Gate is one of eight gates in the Etruscan wall of Perusia, known today as Perugia.

Porta Eburnea

One of the original Etruscan gates of Perugia, also known as Arco della Mandorla. While modified in the 14th century, it retains its ancient travertine base and marks the entrance to the Eburnea district.

Fortilizio dei Mulini

A fortified watchtower situated at the end of the Ponte delle Torri. Originally part of Spoleto's defensive network, the building later functioned as a grain mill powered by the aqueduct's water.
