Historical Sites in Qatar

Qatar’s historical landscape spans from Neolithic rock art to 20th-century defensive structures. This collection features the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah, an 18th-century pearl trading port, and the Al Jassasiya Petroglyphs, home to nearly 900 ancient carvings. Visitors can explore the 1938 Al Zubara Fort, the restored royal palace of Sheikh Abdulla bin Jassim Al-Thani, and the 18th-century Zekreet Fort on the west coast. These sites preserve the architectural evolution of the peninsula, from abandoned coastal fishing villages to the grand seat of government at the Emiri Diwan.

Al Zubarah Archaeological Site

UNESCO World Heritage site featuring the remains of an 18th-century pearl fishing and trading port. The site includes a fortified town, a harbor, and a canal.

Al Zubara Fort

Built in 1938 by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, this desert fort features three circular towers and one rectangular tower. It now serves as a museum.

Sheikh Abdulla bin Jassim Al-Thani Palace

A restored early 20th-century palace that served as the residence of the former ruler. It is now the central architectural feature of the National Museum of Qatar.

The administrative seat of the State of Qatar. This grand palace on the Doha Corniche serves as the official workplace of the Emir and the government.

Al Jassasiya Petroglyphs

An archaeological site containing 874 rock carvings discovered in 1957. The petroglyphs depict cup marks, dhows, and geometric patterns dating back several centuries.

Zekreet Fort

An 18th-century fortification on the west coast featuring a square layout with circular corner towers, located near unique limestone rock formations.

Al Khor Archeological Ruins

Located on Bin Ghannam Island, these ruins include evidence of a dye industry dating back to the 2nd millennium BCE, where purple dye was extracted from murex snails.
