Everything in Berlin goes through the Alexanderplatz, the central square in Berlin - buses, trams, subway and even tourists. If you are visiting Berlin, you will be walking through the Alexanderplatz, too. At the corner of the square is a famous World Time Clock, which shows what time it is in different time zones.
This spacious open square is always busy. Many famous and expensive shops, restaurants and cafés are located around it, along with affordable fast foods and malls (KFC, Primark). During summer, many stalls and small bistros can be found here, there is usually also live music and impersonators. Every winter, a Christmas Market takes place here.
The square, named after the prominent Russian emperor Alexander I, originally used to be a cattle market. It reached the peak of its glory days during the 20th century. The grey unattractive buildings that surround it today are the result of bombing during the Second World War and of architectonic adjustments done by the East Germans afterward.
When visiting, be mindful of your personal belongings, there may be thieves frequenting the square. You may also encounter beggars.
