On this site an incident that is now considered to be one of the sparks that ignited the Revolutionary War happened in 1770. On March 5, 1770, one of the colonists started verbally attacking and assaulting a British soldier due to the immense friction between the two groups at that time. This caught the attention of other colonists and in consequence, an angry mob gathered around the soldiers. The colonists were throwing snowballs at them and hitting them with sticks.
After being brought to the ground, the captain of the soldiers fired into the crowd. The other soldiers took it as an order to fire, and in the confusion that followed, five Bostonians were killed and several others were wounded.
