Carillon at the New Town Hall

This carillon, to be found in the tower of the New Town Hall on Marienplatz, is one of Munich's trademark sights and a tourist favourite. It is also the largest carillon in Germany. Three times during the day, figures appear on it as the bells on the tower chime and perform tales from the city's history.

The carillon was only added to the tower in 1908, as a part of a second construction phase. It consists of a small, two-level-high stage, with a different tale being shown at each floor, all linked to a 16th century Duke, called Wilhelm and his wife, Renata of Lorraine. There are 3 main motifs: a wedding, a jousting tournament, and a dance.

To enact them, the carillon makes use of 43 bells and 32 figures altogether. The first show of the day comes at 11 am, followed by one more repetition at noon, and, during the summer, at 5 pm.
