The site consists of the Cabinet War Rooms, a secret underground headquarters built starting in June 1938 to withstand aerial bombing. It became operational in 1939 and served as the nerve center for British warfare until 1945. This historic bunker housed the government’s command operations, including the Transatlantic Telephone Room and various strategic offices used by Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Preserved for its historical value after the war, the facility opened to the public in 1984 as a branch of the Imperial War Museum. The complex includes the Churchill Museum, which focuses on the life and leadership of the wartime leader. The underground environment retains original equipment and layout from the conflict era, providing insight into the decision-making processes of the British government.
The museum is open to the public. Booking is available for tours of the preserved underground offices and operations rooms.
