Dating back to the 19th century, the cemetery is located just outside the historic center of Florence. It was not placed inside the city walls since it was a protestant burial site. Before the Reformed Church of Switzerland purchased this land and established the cemetery, non-Catholics and non-Jews had to be buried in Livorno.
The cemetery is nice and simple, with a variety of gravestones commemorating people from sixteen different countries such as England, Switzerland or Russia. It is also a resting place for many famous people, such as English poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Walter Savage Landor.
