The palace was built in 1489 by Giuliano da Sangallo for the banker Giuliano Gondi the Elder on the site of a Roman theater. It was restored by Poggi in the 1870s who remodeled the facade after demolishing part of the palace.
The central courtyard is richly decorated with sculptures and features Corinthian columns. A fountain was added in the 17th century.
