Kyoto Imperial Palace

This palace used to be the home of the imperial family until 1868 when the capital of Japan moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. Although no longer seat of the emperor today, it continues to amaze its visitors by the magnificent buildings and beautiful gardens.

Although the emperors used to rule from this place since as early as the Heian period, the building that can be seen today is only 170 years old, as the palace had burnt down and had to be rebuilt several times.

When visiting, be sure to notice the Shishinden Imperial State Chamber. This is where the enthronement ceremonies of emperors took place, up until 1915.

Please note that if you want to see the interior of the palace, you need to receive a permit beforehand. You can apply for the permit in a tourist office on site, or in advance on the official website of the palace. Be also aware that it is prohibited to bring larger luggage inside with you and that there are inspections of baggage at the entrance.
