This district charms visitors by its uniquely Greek atmosphere, complete with performances by local musicians. Its small but serene streets are a reminder of days long gone.
The quarter has a rich history. The oldest district of Athens is located north-east of Acropolis, spreading out to Syntagma Square. Built over the ruins of the ancient city center - the agora, it had survived battles against the Turks in 1826 as well as a devastating fire in 1884. Today, it is bustling with life, being one of the most popular quarters in the city.
The district boasts cafés and restaurants serving typical Greek dishes, but also boutiques, jewelry stores, and tourist shops. Wander around, marvel at the Neoclassical buildings and stop by at one of the many museums located here.
Due to its popularity, some visitors complain that the place has become too "touristy". When buying something, check the prices carefully, as the goods tend to be a little too expensive. You will be able to avoid the crowds if you come off season, however, keep in mind that some shops may be closed then.
