Novo mesto is the administrative center of the Dolenjska region, built on a prominent bend of the Krka River. The town is a significant archaeological site, famous for Iron Age situlae displayed at the Dolenjska Museum. Nearby, the landscape is dotted with medieval fortifications, including the unique island castle of Otočec and the cliffside ruins of Luknja Castle.
