Paraty's Unmissable Treasures

Paraty preserves its 18th and 19th-century colonial architecture, characterized by whitewashed walls and cobblestone streets. This collection highlights the town's religious heritage through its four distinct colonial churches, which historically served different social classes. The list also includes defensive fortifications overlooking the bay, a cultural hub housed in a historic 1754 mansion, and the iconic city monument marking the entrance to this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Igreja Santa Rita de Cassia

Constructed in 1722, this is the oldest church in Paraty. It features traditional Jesuit architecture and currently houses the Museum of Sacred Art, displaying religious artifacts from the 17th to 20th centuries.

Forte Defensor Perpétuo

Originally built in 1703 to protect the gold trade, this fort was reconstructed in 1822. The site features original cannons, a powder magazine, and a museum documenting colonial history and traditional caiçara culture.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

Completed in 1873 in neoclassical style, this is Paraty's largest church. It serves as the main parish church and dominates the central square, featuring massive stone walls and an unfinished second tower.

Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores

Built in 1800 by the town's aristocratic women, this waterfront church features a refined Rococo interior. It historically served the local elite and remains one of the town's most photographed colonial structures.

Casa da Cultura de Paraty

Housed in a restored 1754 colonial mansion, this center hosts rotating art exhibitions, musical performances, and workshops. It preserves original architectural details like wide floorboards and internal courtyards.

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário

Constructed in 1725 by and for enslaved Africans, this church features a simplified colonial facade and an interior dedicated to Saint Benedict. It is a significant historical site for the town’s Afro-Brazilian community.
