Historic Sites

Vieste's historical landscape is defined by its strategic coastal defenses and ancient settlements. The 13th-century Castello Svevo, commissioned by Frederick II, stands as a central fortress overlooking the Adriatic. Along the coastline, a series of 16th-century watchtowers, including Torre San Felice and Torre Portogreco, were built to signal Saracen invasions. The inland areas feature the ruins of historical barracks like Caserma Caritate, while the Necropoli La Salata preserves rock-cut tombs from the early Christian period.

Torre Portogreco

A 16th-century coastal watchtower overlooking a secluded bay, part of the defensive network built to protect the Gargano coast from pirate raids.

Castello Svevo

A 13th-century fortification built by Frederick II and later reinforced by the Spanish in the 1500s. Situated on a limestone cliff, it remains a prominent landmark of medieval Vieste.
