Peaks and Waterfalls

Madeira's central massif contains the island's highest peaks, including Pico Ruivo at 1,862 meters and Pico do Areeiro at 1,818 meters. This volcanic landscape is defined by sheer cliffs, deep canyons, and stone-cut paths like the PR1 trail. The region is a designated Special Protection Area, preserving endemic high-altitude vegetation and rare bird species. Beyond the summits, the area features dramatic waterfalls accessible via the island's historic levada irrigation channels and tunnel systems.
