Historically significant as the staging ground for General San Martín’s liberation campaign, it preserves 18th-century adobe vaults at Uspallata and ancient Inca road ruins at Tambillitos. The high-altitude border crossing at Christ the Redeemer marks the boundary between Argentina and Chile.
