Newcastle and Gateshead’s cultural scene spans from the medieval Newcastle Castle and its 13th-century gatehouse, The Black Gate, to the contemporary BALTIC Centre, housed in a former flour mill. The Great North Museum: Hancock features natural history and ancient civilizations, while the Discovery Museum showcases the city's maritime and industrial heritage, including the Turbinia. Art is represented by the Laing Art Gallery’s local collections, the university-based Hatton Gallery, and The Biscuit Factory. Interactive science is centered at the Centre for Life.
