North Aegean Essentials

The North Aegean islands preserve a diverse historical record, from the 6th-century BC Tunnel of Eupalinos and the Temple of Hera on Samos to the 11th-century mosaics of Nea Moni on Chios. The region's defensive history is evident in the Byzantine and Genoese fortifications of Mytilene, Molyvos, and Myrina. Unique environmental sites include the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a rare fossilized ecosystem, and the Chios Mastic Museum, which explores the traditional cultivation of mastic resin in the island's southern villages.

Historic Fortresses of the North Aegean
