Ancient Ruins & Rock Art

The Souss-Massa region preserves a diverse archaeological record spanning from prehistoric rock art to medieval fortifications. This collection features the petroglyphs of Akka and Oued Tam, which depict ancient fauna and symbols etched into the desert landscape. Architectural highlights include the 16th-century Saadian ruins of Agadir Oufellah and the traditional fortified granary of Agadir Indonidif. These sites, along with the cave of Tamzar and the engravings at Guelta Oukas, offer a direct link to the region’s early Berber history and prehistoric heritage.

Kasbaht Agadir Oufellah

Ruins of a 16th-century fortress built by the Saadian dynasty. Most of the structure was destroyed during the 1960 earthquake, but the original outer walls remain on the hilltop overlooking the modern city and bay.

Oued Tam

Archaeological site featuring prehistoric rock engravings, or petroglyphs, depicting various animals and geometric symbols carved into the stone surfaces.

Guelta Oukas Gravures

Prehistoric rock art site located near a guelta, featuring engravings of wildlife and ancient symbols etched into the surrounding rock faces.

Petroglyphs of Akka

Significant concentration of Neolithic rock engravings located near the Akka oasis. The site features depictions of elephants, rhinoceroses, and other fauna that once inhabited the Saharan landscape.

Tamzar

Prehistoric cave and archaeological site located in the rugged terrain of the Anti-Atlas mountains.

Agadir Indonidif

Ruins of a traditional fortified granary, known as an agadir, typical of the communal storage architecture found throughout the Berber regions of the Anti-Atlas.
