Religious Heritage

The religious heritage of Kissamos is anchored by the 17th-century Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, a prominent Eastern Orthodox site perched on a southwest coastal cliff. The region’s spiritual landscape also includes smaller Greek Orthodox chapels such as Aghios Ioannis and Agii Pateres, which are characteristic of the rural Cretan countryside. These sites, together with historical church ruins, illustrate the Byzantine and post-Byzantine architectural traditions that have persisted in this part of Crete for centuries.
