Heritage Sites

The Sognefjord region preserves a high concentration of Norway’s medieval architecture and ancient monuments. Kaupanger stavkyrkje

Built around 1140, this is one of Norway's oldest stave churches. It features a long church design supported by 22 load-bearing pillars and contains a collection of medieval altar decorations.

Tønjum kyrkje

A wooden parish church in Lærdal completed in 1832. It was built to replace a medieval stave church that stood on the site until it was destroyed by a storm.

A wooden octagonal church in Balestrand built in 1863. The site has served as a place of worship since the Middle Ages, originally housing a stave church.
