Heritage Sites

The Sognefjord region preserves a high concentration of Norway’s medieval architecture and ancient monuments. This collection features 12th-century stave churches like Hopperstad and Kaupanger, alongside Hove Church, one of the country's oldest stone structures. Beyond ecclesiastical history, the list includes the Baldersteinen—Norway's tallest standing stone—and coastal fortifications at Kirkeøen. Kaupanger stavkyrkje

Built around 1140, this is one of Norway's oldest stave churches. It features a long church design supported by 22 load-bearing pillars and contains a collection of medieval altar decorations.

Tønjum kyrkje

A wooden parish church in Lærdal completed in 1832. It was built to replace a medieval stave church that stood on the site until it was destroyed by a storm.

Tjugum kyrkje

A wooden octagonal church in Balestrand built in 1863. The site has served as a place of worship since the Middle Ages, originally housing a stave church.

Constructed around 1170, this Romanesque stone church is one of the oldest stone buildings in Sogn. It was built using locally quarried soapstone and once served as a private chapel.
