Religious Landmarks
Northern Portugal’s religious landscape features a dense concentration of historical sanctuaries, cathedrals, and monasteries. This collection includes the UNESCO-listed Bom Jesus do Monte with its monumental Baroque stairway and the 11th-century Braga Cathedral, the oldest in the country. Visitors can explore the pre-Romanesque Chapel of São Frutuoso, the hilltop Marian shrine of Sameiro, and the Romanesque Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro. These sites showcase architectural styles ranging from early Christian and Gothic to ornate Baroque and Neoclassical designs across Braga and Guimarães.
Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo
A small, austere Romanesque chapel located next to Guimarães Castle. According to tradition, it is the 12th-century site where Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, was baptized.
