Mount Gambier Lookouts
Mount Gambier’s volcanic landscape is defined by dormant Maar volcanoes and the striking Blue Lake. These vantage points offer views of the 75-meter-deep crater, which transforms from steel grey to vivid cobalt blue between November and March. The lookouts span the surrounding Valley Lake, the reforestation projects at Leg of Mutton Lake, and the historic Centenary Tower, providing perspectives on the region's geological history.
A Centenary Tower Lookout
Opened in 1904 at 190 meters above sea level, this historic tower provides the highest viewpoint in Mount Gambier. On clear days, the vista extends to the Southern Ocean and across the volcanic landscape.
Blue Lake Lookout
Elevated vantage point located on the rim of the dormant volcano, offering direct views of the lake's seasonal color transition and the sheer limestone cliffs.
Blue Lake
A 75-meter-deep crater lake within a dormant volcano. Its water changes from steel grey in winter to a bright cobalt blue in summer due to temperature-sensitive calcium carbonate precipitation.
D Blue Lake Lookout
Situated on the northern rim, this point provides a perspective of the lake's diameter and the pumping station that supplies the city’s water.
Leg of Mutton Lake Lookout
Overlooks a smaller crater named for its distinct shape. The area is characterized by dense reforestation and is often drier than the neighboring Blue Lake.
