November to March is the coolest and driest stretch, with the least rain. April and May turn hot and humid before the southwest monsoon brings near-daily downpours from June through October.

Time a visit around the Phuket Vegetarian Festival in late September or October, when Chinese shrines across the Old Town host nine days of processions, street food, and dramatic rituals.

Expect brief afternoon showers even outside the wettest months.

Wat Mongkol Nimit is one of the town's grandest temples, with Sino-Portuguese-influenced architecture and a large golden Buddha. It's a good starting point before exploring the Old Town on foot.

The heart of the Old Town is Thalang Road, lined with early-1900s shophouses in pastel yellows, blues, and greens, their fronts topped with Chinese lanterns. Just off it, Soi Rommanee is one of the best-preserved lanes, often used as a film backdrop for its shuttered windows and covered walkways.

Baan Chinpracha is a restored 1903 mansion built by a tin-mining family, its rooms furnished with Peranakan antiques and porcelain. A short walk away, Thai Hua Museum explains the Hokkien Chinese immigration that shaped the town, set in a former school building.

Put Jaw Chinese Temple is a small, atmospheric Chinese shrine dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods, the starting point for the town's biggest annual festival.

For a view over the rooftops, climb Wat Khao Rang, a hillside temple on the edge of downtown with a viewpoint looking out toward the sea.

Time a visit around these local rituals:

• Join the Sunday evening walking street: Lard Yai Sunday Night Market closes Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee to traffic for street food, live music, and craft stalls under strings of lanterns.
• If visiting in late September or October, follow the processions of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, nine days of street parades and rituals that start at Chinese shrines across the Old Town, including Put Jaw Chinese Temple.

Phuket Town makes a good base for exploring the rest of the island and the surrounding sea.

• Chalong and the Big Buddha — ≈20-30 min by car. Home to the province's most revered temple and a 45-meter hilltop marble Buddha with island-wide views.
• Patong — ≈30-35 min by car. The island's busiest beach, with the most restaurants, bars, and nightlife.
• Kata and Karon beaches — ≈20-30 min by car. Quieter, more laid-back alternatives to Patong.
• Phi Phi Islands — ≈45 min-1 hour by speedboat from Rassada Pier. Limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and Maya Bay, best visited on an early boat before the crowds.
• Phang Nga Bay — ≈1.5-2 hours by boat, or by road plus boat. Dramatic limestone karsts rising from the sea, including the island known as James Bond Island.

• By air: Phuket International Airport (HKT) has scheduled international and domestic flights. It's roughly 30 km / 45 min-1 hour north of town by taxi (metered or a fixed fare, ≈500-700 THB), Grab, or an airport minibus (≈150-200 THB).
• By train: Phuket has no railway. The nearest station is in Surat Thani, about 3.5-4 hours away by road, followed by a bus or minivan transfer.
• By bus: Phuket Bus Terminal 2 has long-distance coaches from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (≈12-13 hours), plus regular connections from Krabi and Surat Thani.

• Public transit: Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run fixed routes from a stand near the old clock tower to beaches and other towns on the island. Pay the driver in cash on board; each route has a flat fare.
• Taxi / ride-hailing: Grab operates alongside metered taxis and tuk-tuks. Agree a price with tuk-tuk drivers before getting in, since they rarely use meters.
• On foot: The Old Town core is small and flat, and easiest to explore on foot.

• Is a car worth it? Not for the Old Town itself — it's small and walkable — but useful for reaching beaches, the Big Buddha, or other parts of the island independently.
• Driving is on the left, as throughout Thailand.
• Parking: paid lots and metered street bays around the Old Town and near the day and night markets.
• No congestion charge or low-emission zone applies.

Phuket Town's food reflects its Peranakan (Baba) heritage, a mix of Hokkien Chinese and Malay influences distinct from mainland Thai cooking. Look for mee hokkien (stir-fried yellow noodles with pork and seafood), moo hong (slow-braised pork belly), and o-tao (crispy oyster omelette).

The best place to try them is the stalls along Thalang Road on Sunday evenings, when the street closes to traffic for the weekly walking market, or the daytime hawker stalls around the old fresh market on Ranong Road.

Phuket Town is safe for tourists, with petty theft and traffic the main risks rather than violent crime. Watch for bag-snatching by passing motorbikes and the usual overpriced-tour or closed-attraction scams near popular sights.

Wear a helmet on any motorbike or scooter — enforcement is inconsistent, but accidents involving tourists on rented bikes are common. Cross streets carefully, since drivers do not reliably stop for pedestrians.

Phuket Town grew rich on tin mining in the 1800s, when Chinese laborers, many from Penang and Malacca, settled here and intermarried with local Thai families. Their descendants became the Peranakan (Baba) community, and their wealth built the shophouses that still line Thalang Road and the surrounding Old Town, including Baan Chinpracha, a restored 1903 mansion that shows the lifestyle that wealth created.

The town's identity is also tied to the Vegetarian Festival, first held in the 1820s after a traveling Chinese opera troupe fell ill and recovered by following a strict vegetarian diet and ritual purification. Shrines like Put Jaw Chinese Temple still lead the processions every year.
