Historic Fortifications and Ruins

This collection highlights the defensive architecture and archaeological heritage of Sarajevo's Stari Grad and the surrounding heights. It focuses on the 18th-century Vratnik walled city system, including the Yellow and White bastions built for strategic defense. The list also features the Austro-Hungarian Bistrik Kula, which later served as the country's only astronomical observatory, and medieval stećci tombstones at Bukovik, illustrating the region's military and cultural evolution from the Middle Ages through the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods.

Bistrik Kula

A former Austro-Hungarian military fortification on Mount Trebević that was converted into Bosnia and Herzegovina's first and only astronomical observatory in the late 1960s.

Bijela Tabija

The White Fortress is an old fort overlooking the historic core of Sarajevo. It is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Žuta Tabija

The Yellow Fortress or Yellow Bastion is a cannon fortress at the entrance of the "Walled City of Vratnik".

Bijela tabija

An 18th-century stone fortress and national monument situated on a cliff overlooking the Miljacka canyon. It served as a primary defensive point for the walled city of Vratnik.

Crvena tabija

One of the defensive bastions belonging to the 18th-century fortifications of the Vratnik district, built to protect the eastern approaches to the city.

Tabija Zmajevac

A historic bastion located in the Zmajevac area, forming part of the defensive network of fortifications surrounding Sarajevo.

Velika Kula Barice
