Tohoku Castles

The Tohoku region preserves significant remnants of Japan's feudal history through its diverse castle architecture. Key sites include the red-tiled Tsuruga Castle in Aizuwakamatsu and the massive stone foundations of Sendai’s Aoba Castle, once the seat of the Date clan. These fortifications range from reconstructed keeps to original Edo-period turrets and granite walls. Beyond their defensive history, these sites feature preserved moats and gates that were central to the region’s strategic importance during the samurai era and the Boshin War.
