Historic Windmills

Fuerteventura’s landscape is defined by two types of traditional grain mills: the circular, multi-story 'molino' and the later, single-story 'molina'. Developed between the 18th and 19th centuries, these structures were vital for producing gofio, a staple Canary Island flour made from toasted grain. Many of these sites are now protected as cultural heritage, showcasing the island's historic reliance on trade winds for agricultural processing and food production.

Molino de Villaverde

Two 18th-century stone tower mills situated on a ridge overlooking the village. They feature traditional wooden machinery used for grinding grain into gofio.

Molino de Antigua

A fully restored 18th-century windmill located within the Museo del Queso Majorero. It features a circular stone base and a rotating wooden cap.

Molino de Tiscamanita

Part of the Windmill Interpretation Center, this site contains both a traditional tower mill and a more modern molina, illustrating the evolution of milling technology.

Molino de Tefía

A single-story molina structure located near Tindaya, designed to be more efficient and easier to operate than the older tower mills.

Molina Puerto del Rosario

A restored 19th-century grain mill in the capital, representing the later architectural shift toward the more compact, rectangular molina design.

Molino de la Corte

A well-preserved traditional windmill in Antigua, designated as a Site of Cultural Interest for its significance to the island's agricultural history.
