Iconic Alpine Huts

This collection features the most significant high-altitude refuges across the Trentino-South Tyrol region, ranging from historic World War I sites to modern shelters at 3,000 meters. The list includes essential stops along the Alta Via 1 and 4, such as the iconic Dreizinnenhütte facing the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Rifugio Achille Papa at the end of the Road of 52 Tunnels. These huts provide strategic access to the Sella Group, the Pale di San Martino, and the glacier-capped peaks of the Ötztal and Zillertal Alps.

Dreizinnenhütte - Rifugio Antonio Locatelli/Sepp Innerkofler

Situated at 2,405 meters, this historic hut provides the primary vantage point for the north faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Originally built in 1881, the current structure serves as a key junction for hikers on the Alta Via 4.

Rifugio Capanna Piz Fassa

Located at the 3,152-meter summit of Piz Boè, this is the highest refuge in the Sella Group. It offers a 360-degree panorama of the Dolomites and is typically open from late June to September.

Tierser Alpl Hütte - Rifugio Alpe di Tires

Recognized by its distinctive red roof, this private hut sits at the saddle between the Sciliar and Catinaccio massifs. It was hand-built by Maximilian Aichner in the 1950s and serves as a gateway to the Alpe di Tires.

Rifugio Achille Papa

Located at the Porte del Pasubio, this refuge occupies former World War I military barracks. It marks the conclusion of the historic Strada delle 52 Gallerie (Road of 52 Tunnels) at an elevation of 1,928 meters.

Ütia de Scotoni - Scotoni-Hütte - Rifugio Scotoni

Set in the Lagazuoi-Fanis area at 1,985 meters, this family-run hut is renowned for its Ladin cuisine and grilled specialties. It is a frequent stop for hikers descending from the Forcella del Lago.

Rifugio Fanes

Located in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, this refuge is known for its traditional Ladin wood architecture. It serves as a central hub on the Alta Via 1, offering amenities like Wi-Fi and hot showers.

Emilio-Comici-Hütte - Rifugio Emilio Comici

Situated at the foot of the Sassolungo, this hut is famous for its blue shutters and an unexpected specialty of fresh seafood dishes. It is a major landmark within the Sellaronda hiking and skiing circuit.

Rifugio Lavaredo

Located at the base of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, this hut provides easy access to the Paterno mountain and the Cengia de Mattia. It is wheelchair accessible via the wide gravel path from Rifugio Auronzo.

Rifugio Boé

Positioned on the Sella Plateau at 2,871 meters, this refuge dates back to 1898. It features a winter room for off-season climbers and serves as a base for ascending Piz Boè.

Baita Segantini

Perched at the Passo Costazza, this hut offers the classic view of the Cimon della Pala reflected in a small alpine pond. It was originally constructed by the mountain guide and artist Alfredo Paluselli.

Rifugio Cima d'Asta Ottone Brentari

This granite-built refuge sits at 2,473 meters next to a glacial lake in the Lagorai range. It is the primary base for climbing Cima d’Asta, the highest peak of the massif.

Schutzhaus Latzfonser Kreuz - Rifugio Santa Croce di Lazfons

Adjacent to the highest pilgrimage church in Europe, this refuge sits at 2,300 meters. It serves hikers visiting the Latzfonser Kreuz, a site of religious significance since the 18th century.

Weißkugelhütte - Rifugio Pio XI alla Palla Bianca

Located in the Vallelunga at 2,544 meters, this hut faces the massive glacier of the Weißkugel (Palla Bianca). It is a strategic base for high-altitude glacier tours in the Ötztal Alps.

Hochfeilerhütte

Standing at 2,710 meters, this refuge is the essential starting point for the ascent of Hochfeiler (Gran Pilastro), the highest peak in the Zillertal Alps, offering views over the Glaneferner glacier.

Birnlückenhütte - Rifugio Brigata Tridentina

Situated near the Birnlücke pass on the border between Italy and Austria, this hut sits at 2,445 meters. It provides access to the Venediger Group and the high-altitude trails of the Ahrntal Valley.
