Yellowstone Scenic Vistas

Yellowstone’s diverse geology is best observed from these designated vantage points. The list includes the iconic Artist Point and Inspiration Point, which showcase the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and its 308-foot Lower Falls. Higher elevations like Mount Washburn provide panoramic views of the park’s caldera, while Roaring Mountain highlights hydrothermal activity through hissing fumaroles. Observation Point, Yellowstone NP

Reached via a 1.5-mile round-trip trail from Geyser Hill, this vantage point provides an elevated view of Old Faithful Geyser and the Upper Geyser Basin.

Crystal Falls overlook

Located on the South Rim Trail, this viewpoint overlooks the 129-foot drop of Crystal Falls, situated between the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River.

Calcite Springs

Overlook featuring views of the Yellowstone River, steep basalt columns, and hydrothermal springs. This area marks the narrowest part of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Washburn Hotsprings Overlook

Provides views of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the edge of the Yellowstone Caldera. On clear days, the Teton Range is visible to the south.

Artist Point

Situated on the South Rim, this viewpoint offers a classic perspective of the 308-foot Lower Falls and the yellow, pink, and orange rhyolite canyon walls.

Inspiration Point

A North Rim overlook extending into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, providing views of the river and canyon architecture downstream.

Grand View

Located on the North Rim, this site provides a direct look at the colorful canyon walls and the Yellowstone River winding through the gorge below.

Roaring Mountain

A large hillside covered in active fumaroles. The high concentration of sulfuric acid has bleached the rock, and the escaping steam creates a distinct hissing sound.

Mount Washburn Lookout Tower

A working fire lookout station at 10,243 feet. It features interpretive exhibits, a sheltered observation area, and views spanning the entire Yellowstone caldera.
