Bolzano's strategic location in South Tyrol resulted in a high concentration of medieval fortifications and noble residences. This collection features Runkelstein Castle, renowned for its extensive cycle of secular medieval frescoes, and Sigmundskron Castle, home to the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian. From the well-preserved Maretsch Castle near the city center to the dramatic cliffside ruins of Rafenstein and Greifenstein, these sites showcase Gothic and Renaissance architecture alongside defensive military structures dating back to the 12th century.
