Viewpoints and Towers

This collection highlights the historic defensive structures and observation points of Lucerne. It features several towers of the 14th-century Musegg Wall, including the Zytturm with its 1535 clock and the Männliturm. The list also includes the iconic octagonal Wasserturm, a former prison and treasury standing in the Reuss River. Engineering landmarks like the 19th-century needle dam at the Reusswehr demonstrate traditional water management, while various vantage points offer elevated views across the medieval Old Town and the surrounding alpine landscape.

A needle dam is a weir designed to maintain the level or flow of a river through the use of thin "needles" of wood.

Wasserturm

This 34-meter-high octagonal tower was built around 1300 as part of the city fortifications. It has served as a treasury, archive, prison, and torture chamber. It stands in the Reuss river adjacent to the Chapel Bridge.

Zytturm

Built in 1442, this tower houses the city’s oldest clock, dating from 1535. By ancient privilege, this clock strikes the hour exactly one minute before all other public clocks in Lucerne.

Männliturm

A 33-meter-high tower on the Musegg Wall, named after the "Männli" (little man), an iron figure holding a flag on the roof. It is open to the public and offers views of the city and lake.

Rathausturm

The clock tower of the Old Town Hall, built between 1602 and 1606 in the Italian Renaissance style. It features a distinctive roof and served as a lookout over the market square.

Nölliturm

A round stone tower built in 1513 at the western end of the Musegg Wall. It stands at the edge of the Reuss river and marks the start of the historic city fortifications.

Schirmerturm

This 15th-century tower on the Musegg Wall functions as a gate tower. It provides a passage through the historic fortifications and is accessible to visitors during the summer months.
