Heritage Sites

Qatar’s historical landscape spans from Neolithic rock carvings to 20th-century administrative centers. This collection features the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, a former pearling hub, alongside desert fortifications like Al Zubara Fort and Zekreet Fort. The list includes the ancient petroglyphs at Al Jassasiya and the remains of traditional fishing villages, offering insight into the region's maritime heritage, early industrial dye production, and defensive architecture.

Al Zubarah Archaeological Site

UNESCO World Heritage site and former 18th-century pearling and trading hub. The walled coastal town contains archaeological remains of palaces, mosques, courtyard houses, and a harbor.

Al Zubara Fort

Iconic 1938 desert fortress built by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. The square structure features three circular towers and one rectangular tower, originally serving as a coast guard station.

Abdullah bin Jassim Palace

Historic 1906 palace that served as the residence of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani during the early 20th century. It is a landmark of cultural identity featured on the QAR 200 banknote.

Al Koot Fort

Historic military fortress and museum showcasing traditional handicrafts, historical photographs, and artifacts of daily life. Originally built in 1880 and reconstructed in 1927, it serves as a significant local landmark.

Amiri Diwan

Official workplace and administrative office serving as the seat of government and the bureaucratic center of the state. It functions as the sovereign body for the country's leadership.

Al Jassasiya Petroglyphs

Archaeological site containing nearly 900 rock carvings. These Neolithic petroglyphs depict dhows, fish, scorpions, and cup marks used for ancient board games.

Zekreet Fort

18th-century fortification located on the Zekreet Peninsula. Constructed from limestone and mud, the fort is characterized by its square layout and circular corner towers.

Al Khor Archeological Ruins

Site of an ancient purple dye industry dating back to the 2nd millennium BCE. Archaeological evidence includes mounds of crushed murex shells used by the Kassites to produce pigment.

Fishing village Ruins

Remains of abandoned coastal settlements featuring traditional stone houses and mosques. These ruins illustrate Qatari village life and maritime architecture prior to the mid-20th century.
