West Azarbaijan Province Essentials

West Azarbaijan Province contains a high concentration of UNESCO-listed heritage and ancient religious sites. The region features the Sasanian-era ruins of Takht-e Soleyman and the Urartian Bastam Citadel, alongside prehistoric mounds like Teppe Hasanlu. Its religious history is preserved in the ancient Armenian Saint Thaddeus Monastery and the Assyrian Naneh Maryam Church. Natural landmarks include the three-tiered Shalmash Falls, the Sahulan water cave, and the Urmia Lake Bridge. The province also houses the tomb of the mystic Shams-e Tabrizi in Khoy.
