Krkonoše

Pohorie · Czech Republic

Krkonoše, the Giant Mountains, is the highest mountain range in the Czech Republic, straddling the border with Poland. Rounded, largely treeless summits rise above dense spruce forest, with Sněžka topping out at 1,603 meters. Both countries protect the highest ridges as national park, and the range draws hikers in summer and skiers in winter in roughly equal numbers.

There is no single city here — the mountains are dotted with small resort villages instead. Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec pod Sněžkou are the two main bases on the Czech side, each with hotels, ski lifts, and trailheads right in the village. Local folklore centers on Krakonoš, a legendary mountain spirit said to guard these peaks and punish those who disrespect them; his statue turns up in villages across the range.

Kedy navštíviť

Summers (June to September) are mild and the best season for hiking above the tree line, though snow can linger into May on the highest ridges. Winter (December to March) brings reliable snow, and the resorts around Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec pod Sněžkou run ski lifts through the season.

August usually brings the most reliable warm, dry weather for hiking, though trails and huts get busy on weekends.

Hlavné pamiatky

Sněžka is the highest peak in the Czech Republic, sitting directly on the border with Poland. A cable car runs most of the way up from Pec pod Sněžkou, or you can hike a marked trail to the summit in a few hours.

Krkonošský národní park has protected the highest parts of the range since 1963, safeguarding arctic-alpine plants that survive here as relics of the last ice age.

Świątynia Wang, a wooden stave church built in Norway centuries ago and moved to Karpacz in 1842, is one of the best-preserved medieval wooden buildings in the region.

Pančavský vodopád is the tallest waterfall in the Czech Republic, dropping down a rock face near the source of the Elbe river.

Śnieżne Kotły, a pair of glacial cirques cut into the ridge, hold snow patches into summer and shelter plants found almost nowhere else in the country.

Wielki Staw and Mały Staw are the largest glacial lakes in the range, sitting in a bowl below the main ridge on the Polish side and a popular stop on the high-level trail.

Odporúčané zoznamy

Čo zažiť

  • Ride the Sněžka cable car up from Pec pod Sněžkou and watch the tree line drop away as you climb toward the summit.
  • Walk or ski a stretch of the high-level trail along the Czech-Polish border, crossing between countries without a checkpoint.
  • Follow the marked cross-country ski trails that link the resort villages in winter.
  • Pick wild blueberries on the high moors in July and August, a long-standing summer tradition in the mountains.
  • Warm up at a mountain hut (bouda) after a hike, the traditional stop for hikers on every long trail in the range.

Jednodňové výlety

The resort villages make a good base for exploring the high peaks. A few gateway towns just below the mountains are worth the trip down, and if you have a full day to spare, the historic city of Wrocław across the border makes a rewarding detour.

  • Vrchlabí (≈20 min by car from Špindlerův Mlýn) is the main gateway town on the Czech side, with the national park's visitor center and museum, plus a Renaissance chateau.
  • Harrachov (≈40–50 min) has a historic glassworks, large ski jumps, and a summer bobsled track.
  • Karpacz (≈40–45 min) is the main Polish resort town, worth combining with a visit to the Wang church.
  • Jelenia Góra (≈45–60 min) is the largest town on the Polish side of the range, with a well-preserved historic square and Baroque townhouses.
  • Wrocław (≈1.5–2 hours) is a flagship option for a full free day — one of Poland's most attractive cities, known for its market square and hundreds of small bronze dwarf statues scattered through its streets.

Ako sa tam dostať

  • By air: Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) is the main gateway, about 2 to 2.5 hours away by car or bus. Wrocław Airport (WRO) in Poland is an alternative for the range's Polish side, about 2 hours away by car, and is worth checking for low-cost connections.
  • By train: Regional trains reach Vrchlabí and Trutnov from Hradec Králové and Pardubice, with onward connections to Prague. From either station, a local bus covers the final stretch up into the mountains. Book on České dráhy.
  • By bus: Direct long-distance coaches run from Prague to Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec pod Sněžkou, especially during the winter ski season — often the easiest way in without a car.

Doprava na mieste

  • Public transit: A regional shuttle bus network links the villages and trailheads; buy tickets from the driver or through the regional transport app. In winter, a combined ski pass often covers both lifts and buses between resorts.
  • Taxi / ride-hailing: Ride-hailing apps barely operate in the mountains — local taxi firms based in each village are the more reliable option for a late return from a trailhead.
  • On foot / cycling: The trail network is dense and well marked with the Czech Tourist Club's colored signs. Cycling is popular on forest roads and marked mountain-bike trails, though the terrain is steep in places.

Šoférovanie

  • Is a car worth it?: Not essential if you're based in one resort village and hiking from there, but useful for reaching Vrchlabí, Harrachov, or the Polish side towns in a single day.
  • Parking: Paid car parks sit at every trailhead and village center; in winter and on summer weekends, expect them to fill by mid-morning. Pay by app or ticket machine.
  • Restrictions: A few roads into the core of the national park are closed to private cars or require a toll — check locally before heading up into the high mountains.

Jedlo a pitie

Mountain huts (boudy) along the trails serve simple, hearty food — bramborák (potato pancakes) and guláš (goulash) are the reliable staples, usually with a local beer. In July and August, look for borůvkové knedlíky, dumplings filled with wild blueberries picked on the high moors — a popular seasonal treat across the resort villages.

For a sit-down meal, Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec pod Sněžkou have the widest choice of restaurants. On the Polish side, Karpacz's main street is lined with grills and pierogi stands.

Bezpečnosť a zdravie

Krkonoše is very safe, with low crime and few scams aimed at tourists. The bigger risk is the weather: conditions above the tree line can change fast even in summer, with wind, fog, and sudden temperature drops. Wear proper hiking boots, carry a warm layer, and stay on marked trails, especially near the exposed summit ridge.

For a mountain emergency, call the Mountain Rescue Service (Horská služba) at 1210, in addition to the general emergency number 112.

História

The Krkonoše have been settled and worked for centuries, first by glassmakers and woodcutters, later by miners searching the valleys for tin and iron ore. Local folklore explains the mountains through Krakonoš, a legendary guardian spirit said to protect the range and punish those who disrespect it — a figure still central to regional identity on both the Czech and Polish sides, where he is known as Liczyrzepa.

The range's history also carries tragedy: Mohyla Hanče a Vrbaty marks the spot where two Czech skiers, Bohumil Hanč and Václav Vrbata, died in a blizzard in March 1913 — Hanč from exhaustion during a cross-country race, Vrbata after going back out to bring him a warm coat — a story still told at mountain huts across the range. The Czech and Polish national parks that now protect the highest peaks were established in 1963 and 1959, among the oldest protected-area designations in Central Europe.
