Cauca Essentials

Cauca features a diverse landscape ranging from the Andean highlands to the Pacific coast. This selection includes the Puracé stratovolcano within its namesake National Natural Park and the colonial heritage of Popayán, represented by the 19th-century Puente del Humilladero and the Museo Arquidiocesano de Arte Religioso. The region’s natural diversity is further highlighted by the volcanic rock formations of the Mandiyaco River canyon and the coastal landmarks of Guapi, including its lighthouse and Pacific beaches.

Puracé

Puracé is an andesitic stratovolcano located in the Puracé National Natural Park in the Cauca Department, Colombia.

Puente del Humilladero

Built in 1873 to facilitate the ascent into Popayán's central square, this brick and lime bridge features eleven arches of varying sizes. It remains a primary architectural landmark of the city’s colonial-style historic center.

Pic Kwe Tha Fiw

An indigenous nature reserve and conservation area focused on protecting the local ecosystem and high-altitude flora. It serves as a site for environmental education and traditional indigenous practices.

Museo Arquidiocesano de Arte Religioso

Housed in an 18th-century Neoclassical mansion, this museum displays an extensive collection of religious paintings, sculptures, and liturgical objects from the 16th to the 20th centuries, primarily from the Quito and Popayán schools.

Cañón del rio Mandiyaco

A narrow canyon formed by the Mandiyaco River cutting through ancient volcanic rock. The site is characterized by its sculpted stone walls, natural pools, and dense tropical vegetation.

Playa Rica

A Pacific coast beach located near Guapi, characterized by dark sands and proximity to mangrove ecosystems.

Faro Guapi

A lighthouse situated at the mouth of the Guapi River on the Pacific coast, serving as a navigational aid for vessels entering the river port from the ocean.
