Historic Sites of North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire’s heritage spans from Roman military engineering at Cawthorn Camp and Wheeldale Road to the spiritual centers of the Middle Ages. The region features significant monastic ruins, including the Cistercian Rievaulx Abbey and the Carthusian Mount Grace Priory. Military history is preserved in the motte-and-bailey structures of Pickering Castle and the fortified remains at Helmsley. Architectural highlights include the Gothic arches of Whitby Abbey and the 1827 monument to Captain James Cook situated on Easby Moor.
