Wat Bowon Niwet Ratchaworawihan

Local nameวัดบวรนิเวศราชวรวิหาร
LocationPhra Nakhon, Bangkok, Thailand

Come and marvel at the walls of this Royal Buddhist temple that nowadays enclose a Buddhist university. Even though it is often overlooked by tourists, it is quite a place to visit - it has a long and intriguing history.

The temple was founded in 1826 and originally, it was divided into two monasteries separated by a canal. They were merged into one huge structure during the reign of King Rama VI at the beginning of the 20th century.

The first abbot to arrive at the temple was Prince Mongkut in 1836. It is still a significant temple of patronage for the ruling Chakri dynasty, many other royals then lived in the temple as monks and studied here.

The main draw for tourists is the ordination hall which boasts a famous Phra Phuttha Chinnasee Buddha image dating back to the 14th century. There are also images of three royal abbots who resided in the monastery and the walls are decorated with unique murals painted by Khrua In Khong.

As in any other Thai temple, take off your shoes before entering and dress properly.
