Ohrid Municipality Essentials

Ohrid Municipality, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserves centuries of history along the shores of one of Europe’s oldest lakes. This selection features the 13th-century Church of St. John at Kaneo, the 11th-century frescoes of St. Sophia, and the Hellenistic-type Ancient Theatre. Beyond the old town's Ottoman-style architecture, such as the Robev Family House, the list includes the prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement at the Bay of Bones and the Monastery of Saint Naum. Natural landmarks include the Galicica National Park and an 1,100-year-old plane tree.

Lakeside Beaches

Lake Ohrid’s shoreline features a mix of central town beaches and secluded coves. These spots range from the pebbly shores of Saraishte and Potpesh, located directly below the historic Old Town cliffs, to the expansive stretches near Lubanista and the Saint Naum Monastery. Many locations, such as Kaneo, provide direct views of Byzantine-style architecture, while others like Inex Gorica offer natural shade from surrounding pine forests. The water is exceptionally clear, typical of one of Europe's oldest and deepest tectonic lakes.

Ancient Sites & Ruins

Ohrid’s archaeological landscape spans from prehistoric settlements to Byzantine masterpieces. This collection features the 200 BC Hellenistic theatre and the reconstructed Bay of Bones pile-dwelling settlement on Lake Ohrid. Religious history is preserved through the 11th-century frescoes of the Church of St. Sophia and the mosaics of Plaoshnik. These sites represent the ancient city of Lychnidos and the region's evolution into a significant cultural and spiritual center of the Balkans.
