Waterfalls in Fjallabak Nature Reserve

Icelandic Water Wonders

This collection features remote water sources and glacial falls within Iceland's Fjallabak Nature Reserve and along the Laugavegur hiking trail. Rauðufossar

Named for the red volcanic rock that forms its backdrop, this waterfall originates from the Rauðufossakvísl river. The distinct coloration is caused by iron-rich soil in the surrounding Rauðufossafjöll mountains.

Tungnaárfellsfoss

A remote waterfall in the southern highlands located near Tungnaárfell mountain. It is fed by the Tungnaá river system, which carries glacial meltwater through the volcanic landscape.

Ljósárfoss

A waterfall situated along the Ljósá river in the rugged Fjallabak region, accessible via highland tracks near the Laugavegur trail.

Storihver

A large, active geothermal hot spring and steam vent located along the Laugavegur trail. It is a major landmark of thermal activity between Landmannalaugar and Hrafntinnusker.

Hrafntinnusker Hut

Also known as Höskuldsskáli, this mountain hut sits at 1,100 meters on the Laugavegur trail. It provides shelter and a reliable drinking water source amidst obsidian fields and nearby geothermal vents.
