Maastricht Underground Adventures
Maastricht’s subterranean landscape features an extensive network of man-made marl caves, historical fortifications, and ancient archaeological sites. The Sint-Pietersberg hill contains thousands of corridors carved out over centuries for stone extraction. These tunnels served as shelters during wartime and house unique charcoal drawings and inscriptions. The area also includes Iron Age settlements like Oppidum Caestert and early medieval motte-and-bailey structures, offering a glimpse into the region's defensive history from pre-Roman times to the modern era.
