Military heritage in Roermond

Roermond's military heritage is defined by significant national memorials and a network of preserved World War II defenses. The city hosts the National East Indies Monument and the National Peace Operations Monument, honoring Dutch servicemen from post-WWII conflicts and international missions. Surrounding the area is a series of Ringstand bunkers—small, concrete defensive fortifications known as Tobruks—built by German forces to defend the Maas-Rur line during the final years of the war.
