Icelandic Heritage and Archaeology

This collection highlights key historical and archaeological sites in Southern Iceland, spanning from the Commonwealth era to the mid-20th century. It features the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Þingvellir, significant for its early parliament and historic ruins, and Surtsey, a volcanic island dedicated to ecological research. The list includes Skálholt, a former medieval bishopric, and Stöng, a Viking-age longhouse preserved by volcanic ash from the 1104 Hekla eruption. These locations provide a physical record of Iceland's religious, political, and geological history.

A

Þingvallabær

Located within the UNESCO-listed Þingvellir National Park, this site features the park's official residence and a historic church. It sits near the assembly site of the Alþingi, established in 930 AD.

Skálholt

One of Iceland’s most significant historic sites, this was the seat of the bishop for South Iceland from 1056 to 1785. The site contains a modern cathedral and archaeological remains of medieval structures.

Stöng

Well-preserved ruins of a Viking-era longhouse abandoned after the 1104 eruption of Mount Hekla. The stone foundations offer insight into medieval Icelandic architecture and the impact of volcanic activity on early settlements.

Beitarhústóft 440012

Archaeological remains of traditional livestock shelters. These ruins represent historical farming practices and the management of grazing land in rural Iceland.

Surtsey

A volcanic island and UNESCO World Heritage site formed by eruptions between 1963 and 1967. It serves as a natural laboratory for studying how life colonizes new land. Public access is strictly prohibited.
