Castles and monuments in Western Macedonia

Western Macedonia’s landscape is marked by defensive structures and commemorative sites spanning the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. This collection features the Byzantine castle-city of Servia with its preserved ecclesiastical ruins, the strategic medieval fortifications of Kteni and Loggas, and the historic Clock Tower of Grevena. It also includes the cenotaph of Metropolitan Aimilianos, a significant monument dedicated to the regional struggles of the early 20th century.

Servia Castle

A Byzantine fortification dating from the 6th to 10th centuries. The site comprises an upper and lower town, featuring ruins of defensive walls and several Byzantine churches, including the 11th-century Church of Saint Basil.

Kteni Castle

Medieval ruins of a Byzantine fortress situated on a rocky hill near the village of Kteni. It historically served as a strategic observation point and defensive outpost overlooking the surrounding plains.

Loggas Castle

Ruins of a Byzantine-era fortress located near Kastoria. The site preserves remnants of defensive walls and towers that played a role during the medieval conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and regional powers.

Clock Tower

An 18th-century Ottoman landmark in Grevena, originally constructed in 1776. The stone structure was destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt, serving as a central architectural symbol of the town.

Κενοτάφιο Μητροπολίτη Αιμιλιανού Γρεβενών

A commemorative monument dedicated to Metropolitan Aimilianos of Grevena, who was killed in 1911. It stands near the site of his martyrdom as a tribute to his role in the Macedonian Struggle.
