Arch of Peace

Local nameArco della Pace
LocationParco Sempione, Milan, Italy

The Arch of Peace is a 25 metres high Neoclassical triumphal arch, located in the centre of Milan. It marks one of the city's historical gates, Porta Sempione.

Although the Arch has only been standing here since the 19th century, the area of the Porta has a much longer history. The gateway was already in use during the times of the ancient Romans, when it served to control the surrounding areas through its strategic position.

The Arch itself has a rich history, too. It was erected to celebrate peace, which is also symbolically depicted by one of the statues at its top, driving a carriage pulled by six horses.

However, while it was originally commissioned by Napoleon as a celebration of his victories, the works on the Arch only drew to a close under orders of emperor Franz Josef I of Austria, Napoleon's adversary and one of the men ultimately responsible for his defeat.

The nearest train station is Milano Domodossola and the nearest metro station, which is about a 12-minute walk away, is Lanza (line 2).
