The arcade was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni and officially opened in September 1867. It is recognized as the world's oldest shopping mall and is distinguished by its neo-Renaissance architecture and art nouveau style features.

The structure includes a central glass dome and vaulted arcades, which create a covered pedestrian space linking Milan's Duomo and Teatro alla Scala. The floor is paved with cobblestones and decorated with mosaics, contributing to its historic and artistic value.

The gallery houses luxury shops and historic restaurants, blending retail with Milanese tradition and culture. It provides indoor pedestrian access and is wheelchair accessible. The panoramic glass roof and the architectural ensemble make it a significant landmark for both shopping and sightseeing.
