Basilica of Saints John and Paul

Local nameBasilica dei santi Giovanni e Paolo
LocationCastello, Venice, Italy

The Gothic parish church, also known as San Zanipolo, was built in the 15th century. It is best known as a burial place of the Venetian doges (25 of them are buried there) but also military officers and artists. The tombs are very imposing pieces of art (usually decorated with statues) and are worth noticing.

Apart from the tombs, there are other pieces of art decorating the interior of the church. One you should not miss is Madonna della Pace (a Byzantine painting). Among other beautiful artworks located inside the church are: the polyptych (by Giovanni Bellini) or The Annunciation (by Paolo Veronese).

You can enter the church for a small fee but you might want to check the official website before you head there to make sure no religious event is planned for the time of your visit (in that case the church might be closed to public).
