Church of Saint Zacharias

Hidden from the eyes of most tourists, this pompous church charms its visitors by the peace and silence inside its walls.

The church we see today was built between 1458 and 1515, but there was a monastery preceding it before it was taken down and replaced with this one. It connects two architectonic styles - the bottom half is built in Gothic style, while the upper half was finished when the Renaissance style was starting to be popular.

Pope Benedict III took refuge here and as an act of gratefulness provided the monastery with precious relics that started a vast collection, which the church was famous for in the olden times. Today, it is mainly known for its crypt, which serves as a place of final rest for the many doges of that era and also for the famous artist - Alessandro Vittoria.

Church of Saint Zacharias contains many famous works of Giovanni Bellini, Andrea del Castagno, Palma Vecchio, Tintoretto, Giuseppe Porta, Palma il Giovane and others.

You're most likely to find this place during strolling through the area, but there are also many ferries (called waterbuses) stopping nearby.
